One of the first things you’ll learn about working in the HVAC business is that the education doesn’t stop when you get the job. The industry is constantly evolving and if you want to succeed as an HVAC mechanic, you have to get the right continuing education to keep up with the latest developments.

One of the best ways to get that education is to go right to the source of the equipment and technology you’ll be working with: the vendors and equipment manufacturers whose gear you are working with.

HVAC Manufacturer Training Serves Both Manufacturers and Contractors

Learning Air Conditioning Repair

HVAC contractors want to ensure their technicians know what they are doing once they get out on the job site. Well-trained professionals work faster and smarter. Training means fewer service call-backs and customer complaints. It’s good business to have mechanics in the field that know the equipment inside and out.

But it’s not just in the contractor’s interest to make sure you get the training you need. Vendors and system manufacturers have every incentive to train you well on their equipment. The customer may not know the installation was botched, but they do know whose name is on the side of the box. The manufacturer wants their equipment to succeed in the field, and to work well, it has to be installed and operated according to their specifications.

Vendor training programs are good for morale, too. Everyone enjoys a break from the day-to-day grind, and trainings present an opportunity to learn and improve. It’s a sign of confidence when your shop sends you to a training course—they’re investing in your future with them. A 2015 survey by Randstad, a human resources service company, indicates that 26 percent of employees who quit a job do so because of a lack of career development opportunities. Professional training is one of the best ways to offer those opportunities.

“Continuing education is so important to us. It’s something we highly believe in, especially when technology is changing and with home automation. Our techs must be up on their game. We are always looking for training from our vendors and suppliers.”Angie Snow, owner of an HVAC contracting business in Orem, Utah

Vendor Training Offers a Specialized Perspective on Equipment

Many HVAC equipment manufacturers are consolidating parts of their training into the standard North American Technical Excellence (NATE) certification. These include:

  • Trane
  • Carrier
  • Lennox
  • Rheem

Different equipment still has different parameters and procedures, however. Particularly on the commercial side, where big money and big units are involved, manufacturers still offer factory training specific to their own equipment.

It’s not just major system vendors, either. Tool and instrument manufacturers often offer training, particularly when a new device is coming to market. A reputation within the industry can be made or broken by first impressions, so companies want to get it right.

Kyle Buscher, a technician and service manager in Minnesota, was on the receiving end of a training session on Vega’s new ProPress tool and said, “The ProPress certification was good knowledge, it was basic knowledge, but the technology was just breaking into the market so they wanted to make sure that guys were using it right.”

Vendor Training Delivery Options

Vendor training covers a wide spectrum of environments and class types, from a single salesman working one-on-one with you over a demo model on site to multi-day, hosted seminars, to formal, multi-week classroom instruction that has the same structure and expectations as a college course.

Although you can expect instructors to be well-informed about the gear being sold by their own company, not everyone is a natural teacher. The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) trade group offers an instructor certification for HVAC trainers called the Educational Program in Instructor Certification designed specifically for HVAC course instructors. Checking the credentials of your course trainer is always a wise idea before enrolling.

Online Training

The internet has revolutionized almost every part of the HVAC industry, and training is no exception. Almost every HVAC equipment manufacturer offers online webinars or classes. In fact, some vendors may only offer their training online.

Because the cost of delivery is very inexpensive, online training is usually cheap or even free. Because there is no instructor testing your understanding or available to answer questions as you study, though, the quality of the education may not be on the level of face-to-face instructor-led training.

The most advanced types of online training are usually multi-media, with video and text materials. They may have automatic quizzes to test your knowledge, and you can often refer back to the material as often as you like, even after the course is finished—a benefit to putting what you have learned into practice out in the field.

Classroom Training

For longer and more in-depth courses, major vendors like Trane, Carrier, and Lennox have dedicated training centers where professional, full-time instructors work in fully-equipped labs with the latest equipment and access to the engineers who designed the equipment. This offers the most up-to-date and comprehensive training solution, but it also is the most expensive. In addition to the cost of the class itself, sometimes thousands of dollars, you or your company have to pay for everything from accommodations and per diem to paying another mechanic to cover you while you’re away.

Because of this, it’s common for only a company’s top prospects to be sent to professional off-site training courses.

Some vendors have a number of regular training sites around the country for classroom training, like Trane, which has classes at the factory in La Crosse, Wisconsin, as well as in regional sales offices. Others, like Carrier, hold most sessions at their own dedicated training facility (in Carrier’s case, in Syracuse, New York).

In either case, such training requires travel, hotel stay, and per diem to cover meals—not a small investment. If you are sent out to take one of these courses, you will often be expected to come back and pass along what you’ve learned to other technicians at the company.

Seminars and Symposiums

Many vendors send trainers out on the road to conduct training for technicians in their own regions. Depending on the vendor and the topic, this sometimes is as simple and straightforward as a salesman conducting a demonstration on equipment in your office. In other cases, seminars are set up that technicians from a number of companies around a region might attend.

Many seminars are put on as one or two day events in local training facilities. They are often structured as a presentation, with one or a handful of instructors demonstrating and lecturing to a large number of attendees. This often offers an opportunity to ask questions, but it may be difficult to get the kind of in-person interaction you would find in a classroom environment.

Seminars and symposiums cost much less than off-site training and may be free, offered as part of new equipment roll-outs.

Residential Equipment Manufacturer Training

Residential equipment manufacturer training is often shorter, less expensive, and less intensive than commercial training. It’s very common for residential training courses to be online or handled in short and informal on-site seminars offered directly by sales staff from the manufacturer.

Much residential HVAC training is also oriented toward selling more product. Although technical knowledge and skills are as important to residential technicians as their commercial counterparts, it’s very common for residential techs to also be responsible for direct sales to customers.

Residential equipment vendors, then, want to make sure that techs are equipped with the latest information about available options and the relative advantages of that manufacturer’s equipment. Training might include sales techniques and briefings on selling points to present to customers.

Although many contractors pay for staff to attend these trainings, it’s possible and not uncommon for technicians to arrange for and cover the cost of residential service training themselves. The certifications and knowledge make HVAC mechanics more valuable both to their current employer and at any future positions they might apply for.

Commercial Equipment Manufacturer Training

The majority of manufacturer training courses are aimed at commercial installers and service technicians. There are several reasons for this bias:

  • Commercial systems are more complex and require more explanation and practice to install and troubleshoot.
  • Commercial HVAC firms or unions tend to be larger and have more resources available to devote to sending technicians to training classes.
  • The value of a commercial customer is greater than residential customers—equipment makers want to ensure their gear is sized, installed, and serviced properly to keep those customers satisfied.

The courses themselves are longer, more expensive, and more intensive than most of their residential counterparts. Although it’s possible to find commercial HVAC training that is conducted online, more courses are in-person and often held off-site at specialized training facilities or even at the corporate factory.

This also means that the quality of commercial HVAC training tends to be high. Commercial HVAC classes also offer more degrees of specialization—training might be oriented toward specific HVAC roles, such as installers, designers, or service technicians.

Commercial courses are usually arranged and paid for by your employer. Technician Mike DeRicco has been in the industry for 26 years and seen the benefits of that arrangement. “My employer encourages us to do that because they actually pay for us to go to those classes,” he says.
